Poems
for Two Voices
The following poems about Hiroshima, the A-bomb,
War, and Peace were written near the end of our Hiroshima Unit. To read them one person
should read the statement on the left, another person should read the statements on the
right, and both people read the statements in the middle. Start at the top right and then
work your way down the poem line by line. We hope you enjoy them.

| On a
sunny morning of August 6, 1945, I looked up towards the sky |
I saw
a flash of different colors, followed by a boom! |
HIROSHIMA WAS DESTROYED |
| Fighting,
killing |
Destroying
everything |
WAR! |
| Our
loved ones died because of the bomb |
Mothers,
Fathers, and Friends all died |
EVERYTHING WAS GONE |
| After
the bomb, Hiroshima declared peace |
Cranes
are now spreading peace... |
ACROSS THE WORLD |

| Beautiful
morning...go to work unsuspecting |

Anola
Guy...overlooking Hiroshima searching for the target |
8:15 A.M. |
| Hear
airplane...look upward shielding my eyes |
I
release the atomic bomb from our aircraft |
BLINDING LIGHT |
| Unconsciousness...shock...I
walk in a daze |
Happy...the
Japanese finally got what they deserved |
EVERYTHING GOES UP IN SMOKE |
| Anger
towards the Americans...they, who caused us such pain and despair |
I
feel proud as I look back at the clouds of ash...the houses burning...and the destruction |
HATE |
| I
cannot walk without hurting, yet my feelings are numb |
I do
feel some regret, but I keep in mind we are fighting a war...revenge |
WAR |
| Time
has passed now...slowly I realize that the Americans are not my enemy...but war itself |
Regret...sadness...and
foolishness...all thoughts that go through my head when I remember that day |
RESOLVE |
| I am
now full of hope for the rebirth of peace and the prevention of war |
Though
I cannot change the past, I know I will never do such a thing again |
PEACE |

| Give
them what we got...Pearl Harbor is avenged |

Innocent
people...we didn't do anything |
IT WAS WAR |
| Grateful
children...Happy soldiers |
Screaming
babies...Worried parents |
FAMILIES REUNITED |
| It
saved Americans so we can lead good lives |
It
killed thousands of us...We live in hell now |
SO MANY HAVE DIED |
| It
ended the war...This was the only way |
We
wanted to stop it...Wasn't there another way? |
IT ENDED THE WAR |
| We
are the U.S.A....A powerful country |
We
are Japan...A dying country |
DEFEATED |
| Highest
country...Help the oppressed |
Merciless
people...Kill the weak |
OCCUPATION |
| Savage
people...Attacked without warning |
We're
a higher country...Helped the oppressed |
WE'RE SO DIFFERENT |
| It
couldn't be helped |
It
shouldn't have happened |
IT WAS WAR |
